I have a very old etching of a girls' orphanage ("Het Meisjes Weeshuis") that has been in my family forever. Ancestors came from The Netherlands to NY in 1688. Anyway, this etching has writing on the edge in pencil that says "doppen (or dopper?) 1660." I do not know if this is a proper name for the artisit, a town, etc. or if it has other meaning, especially with the year after it. I know of several current meanings for the word in Dutch, but none of them make much sense in this context. Perhaps back in the 1600-1700s the word had a different meaning? Can anyone help? Thank you.

It may simply be a misspelling of dopen, i.e., baptism 1660. If it was written in later by someone in New York, it might explain the inaccurate spelling.
