Search Help
Using the search facility:
  • You may type beyond the confines of the search window. The text will scroll ahead
  • Many common words such as all, again, any, at, never, often, and some, are ignored.
  • Please note that the searches are not case sensitive.
    • Example: manhattan will yield the same result as Manhattan.
  • The more words you enter, the narrower the search. By default, the search assumes that all of the words entered must appear in the document sought
    • Example: A search for Amsterdam will find hundreds of resutls. But search for Amsterdam Manhattan farmhouse architecture will find only a few files.
  • If you place your search terms in quotation marks, the search facility looks only for those documents having those words adjacent to one another.
    • Example: "queens county" will find fewer results than queens county.
  • To exclude words use not.
    • Example: manados not delaware would narrow a search for manados
  • Or can be used as a means of finding items with different spellings or in different languages.
    • Example: hempstead or heemstede will find more than either word alone.
  • Search terms can be nested.
    • Example: manhattan "wall street" not ("native americans" or settlement) will yield a relatively narrow resut. Adding more terms will further narrow the search.
  • Wildcards. The asterisk may be used to indicate any number of following letters. It may be used only at the end of a word.
    • Example: netherland* will find netherland, netherlands, netherlandic and netherlandish.
