Seminar XXXIII
The Company Strikes Back: 1673 Recovery of New Netherland

Date: September 25, 2010
Venue: Carol Huxley Theater, CEC Albany

This Seminar will focus on the Restoration of 1673-1674. It is well known that Stuyvesant surrendered the Dutch colony to the English in 1664. What isn't well known is that the Dutch regained control of their former possession almost as easily as it had been lost nine years earlier. Themes include: the European back-ground leading up to the loss of NN in 1664, the English takeover and the Dutch under English rule, the third Anglo-Dutch war and the recapture of the colony in 1673, the Colve administration, and changes when New Netherland becomes New York again. The seminar will place the Restoration in its historical context and try to answer the nagging question: So what?
