| Membership history and purpose:
The membership of the New Netherland Institute, first organized in 1986 as Friends of the New Netherland Project and subsequently as Friends of New Netherland, supports the work of the New Netherland Project and the functions and activities of the New Netherland Institute. Significant financial assistance comes directly from membership fees and donations and from government agencies, corporations, foundations, and societies, both in the United States and abroad. The New Netherland Institute is a not-for-profit membership corporation organized under New York State Education Law and is registered with the U.S. Treasury Department as a tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) organization, see the Institute's latest Form 990. A copy of the Institute's latest annual report may be obtained from the Institute directly or from the Office of the Attorney General, Charities Bureau, 120 Broadway, New York, NY 10271.
Members, their contributions, and benefits of membership:
Membership composition:
The membership of the New Netherland Institute is open to all and demonstrates a wide diversity of backgrounds, education, and interests. Although some members are, for example, historians, genealogists, or linguists by profession, most have joined because of their interest in areas such as Netherlandic or American colonial history, genealogy, language and literature, and popular or material culture. Some were born in the Netherlands, or are descendants of the early settlers of the eastern seaboard. Although much of the membership is clustered here, many members reside across the United States, in Canada, and elsewhere, in particular the Low Countries.
Membership fees, donations, and volunteer activities:
These contributions support the work of the Project and the Institute. They ensure that an essential and unique resource, which provides new insights into the early history and culture of one of this country's most important regions, is accessible to scholars and ultimately to the public at large.
Membership benefits:
In turn, members have the opportunity to meet others with interests similar to their own at regularly scheduled and special events, to receive the Institute's English-language quarterly newsletter De Nieu Nederlanse Marcurius, and to participate in the membership's e-discussion group.
Non-members may subscribe to the print edition of De Nieu Nederlanse Marcurius @ $ 20.00 per year.
Membership fees:
Membership fees largely support a small office staff, responsible for all administrative matters generated by the functions and activities of the New Netherland Project and the New Netherland Institute. Several regular and occasional volunteers have assumed some of the tasks or share these responsibilities.
The annual New Netherland Institute membership fee is $35.00.
The annual fee for an entire family or for an organization is $60.00.
On September 16, 2006, the Board of Trustees of the New Netherland Institute decided to abandon the rolling membership in practice for several years and return to a calendar-year membership (January 1 through December 31). Memberships that are up for renewal during 2007 will be considered as paid in full through December 31, 2007.
Members joining in the last quarter of any calendar year (October, November, December) will be considered as having paid in full throughout the following year.
You may join by completing the printable membership form or register online.
