About Us
The New Netherland Institute’s primary function is to support the New Netherland Project and to provide research and consulting services relating to New Netherland. These services enable the New Netherland Project to complete the New Netherland Documents Series and other translations regarding New Netherland. Current activities include:
- assisting with the development of teaching materials for 4th and 7th grades to be incorporated into the NYS Social Studies curriculum
- developing a graduate research residency program with support from the Doris G. Quinn Foundation
- establishing a Visiting Professor Program, in conjunction with an academic institution and with support from the Doris G. Quinn Foundation, that incorporates the study of the early colonial Dutch experience in America.
- Providing research services for individuals and institutions and consultation services for museums worldwide
- organizing an annual Rensselaerswijck Seminar, held since 1979, which invites speakers to present their latest research on a specific aspect of the Dutch experience in North America
- distributing De Nieu Nederlanse Marcurius, a print- and Web-based English-language quarterly newsletter
- providing a Web-based clearing house of New Netherland information
The New Netherland Institute employs two full-time and one half-time staff and several volunteers .
